It’s really difficult to justify remaining closeted in contemporary Hollywood. There are so many examples of “out” stars whose careers have not only remained strong, but actually flourished in the wake of their outness.

Examples: the ubiquitous Ellen DeGeneres, comedienne Rosie O’Donnell, songstress Melissa Etheridge, actress / Uh Huh Her band member Leisha Hailey, twin sisters / bandmates Tegan & Sara Quin, MSNBC anchorwoman Rachael Maddow…and let us not forget the lovely (and apparently sober!) Lindsay Lohan.

And on the boys side: Star of “Doctor Who” / “Torchwood” John Barrowman, Sir Ian McKellen, T.R. Knight of “Grey’s Anatomy,” David Hyde Pierce of “Frasier,” and of course two-time Emmy and Golden Globe Award nominee / star of “How I Met Your Mother” Neil Patrick Harris.

Still, like any “public display of affection,” outness is a matter of degrees…and personal comfort. As David Hyde Pierce himself once famously stated, “My life is an open book, but don’t expect me to read it to you.”

Thanks for another great podcast, laffingbuddha! Good luck resolving your technical difficulties, if you haven’t already…
